Jar with the Inscription “the 4th Year of Sunwha,” Celadon Housed in Ewha Womans University Museum, was Designated as National Treasure No. 326.
The Jar with the Inscription “the 4th Year of Sunwha” housed in the Ewha Womans University Museum was designated as National Treasure No. 326. As one of the oldest jar preserved intact with the inscription, the Jar with the Inscription “the 4th Year of Sunwha,” which has been housed in the Museum since 1957, has been known for its unique shape, color, and inscription.
This jar is 35.2 centimeters tall with no decorative patterns. Inside the foot at the bottom of the jar, an inscription is engraved, which reads, “In the 12th year of King Seongjong’s reign of Goryeo (the year 993), Choe Gil-hoe, master craftsman (or inspector) in charge of producing ritual vessels in the dynasty, made ritual vessels for the first hall at taemyo (royal ancestral shrine) for King Taejo of Goryeo.” This jar is of great value as chronological records since the inscription contains the information on the celadon’s production such as manufacturing techniques used to make celadon and the makers and the users of ceramics during the early Goryeo period in the late 10th century.
This becomes the second National Treasure housed in the Ewha Womans University Museum in addition to the Jar with Grapevine Design in Underglaze Iron, which is National Treasure No.107. The Museum also has collections of the Seoul Tangible Cultural Property and other precious relics.
