Namwon Jang Professor

Art History

Professor Namwon Jang is a professor in the Department of Art History at the Graduate School of the College of Liberal Art and currently serves as the director of the museum. She received her master's and doctoral degrees in art history from Ewha Womans University Graduate School, and her research encompasses Korean and East Asian ceramic history and craft history in general.  President of the Korean Society of Art History and member of the Cultural Heritage Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, advisory member of the Seoul Metropolitan Government Historiography Committee, expert member of the National Research Foundation of Korea, cultural heritage expert member of the Cultural Heritage Administration, advisor and evaluation member of various museums and cultural property sites, and general affairs director of the Korean Society of Art History.  She served as director of the Korea Museum Association and vice president of the Korea University Museum Association. Currently, she serves as a member of the Cultural Heritage Administration's Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee, a member of the National Museum of Korea's steering committee, and a director of the ICOM Korean Committee.  She published more than 50 papers in domestic and international academic journals, participated in 30 books and co-authored books, and was selected as an outstanding research professor in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and an outstanding research professor in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. She is in charge of research for the 2019 Korea Research Foundation Humanities and Social Research Institute support project selection project <Establishment and release of Joseon Dynasty craft database (2019 ~ 2025)>, and in 2022, he received the Minister of Education Award for excellent evaluation of research support performance. She has continuously carried out research projects for public and private institutions, including the Cultural Heritage Administration, National Palace Museum of Korea, Kyujanggak, and Seoul Craft Museum. Representative works include 『Celadon Research in the Middle Goryeo Period』 (Ewha Research Series 3, Hyean, 2006. '2007 Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Outstanding Academic Book'), 『New Perspectives on Early Korean Art: From Silla to Koryo』 (co-authored, Korea Institute, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, October 2013) and many others.
