Hee-Kyu Heidi Park’s research, teaching, and clinical work are deeply informed by her lived experience of navigating the cultural terrain of her homeland, to which she returned after over twenty years of sojourning abroad. Her work seeks to interweave the complex layers of culture, psychology, and spirituality from the vantage point of the "third space" she occupies as a cultural sojourner.
Her recent book, The Movement of the Heart: Understanding Biblical Engagement for Transformation, examines laypeople’s experiences of spiritual transformation through Bible reading, employing psychological and postcolonial perspectives. The research underpinning this book served as the foundation for her broader exploration of collective trauma and spirituality. This inquiry into collective trauma led to the engagement with the concept of "spectrality," which now forms the basis of her practical theological research methodology. Her current book project builds on this conceptual framework, utilizing spectrality to investigate the complex experiences of Korean and Korean American communities, shaped by colonization, the Cold War, rapid neoliberalization, and trauma related to the climate crisis. This project has generated multiple avenues for engaging the concept of spectrality, enriching the understanding of collective trauma and the spirituality that emerges from it.
Currently, Park is an associate professor of Practical Theology and Pastoral Counseling in the Christian Studies Department at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. Before joining Ewha, she served as an assistant professor of pastoral theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. She has also taught at her alma mater, Claremont School of Theology, and at Lexington Theological Seminary as an instructor.
As a clinician, Park not only trains students but also founded and supervises South Korea’s first Queer Christian Counseling Program, which operates as part of the non-profit organization Q&A. Additionally, she serves as a consultant and group process facilitator at the Good Samaritan House, a shelter and working community for refugees from various countries across Africa and Asia.
Her academic contributions extend to editorial work, as she is one of the co-editors for the Journal for Pastoral Theology and an editorial board member of Brill’s Theology in Practice (THIP) series. Park has also held leadership roles, including chair of the steering committee for the Society for Pastoral Theology and member of the steering committee for the Practical Theology Unit of the American Academy of Religion. She served on the local committee for the International Academy of Practical Theology 2023 Seoul conference and on the executive committee as a local committee representative. She is an ordained minister of word and sacrament in PCUSA.
