Professor Yoon Ho-young from the Division of Communication & Media at Ewha was honored with the Outstanding Paper Award at the 2024 Autumn Conference of the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (KSJCS) held on Saturday, October 19, in Gongju, South Korea. This marks a rare achievement, as he received the same award last year for his 2023 paper, “Does Naver change its algorithm upon receiving official requests?"
The award-winning paper for 2024, titled "News Users' Evaluation of Newsworthiness Regarding the Depiction of Victims in Disaster News Videos," was co-authored with Professor Oh Ryeong of Korea University and supported by the Foundation for Broadcast Culture (FBC). In remarks, during the society’s general meeting, Professor Kim Kyung-hee of Hallym University, who led the evaluation, highlighted the paper's critical contribution by saying, “The study sheds light on the conflict between victims’ privacy and the public’s right to know, offering significant ethical implications for news reporting.”
The research stems from concerns about the widespread use of sensational and provocative disaster footage on social media and in news reporting. The paper examines appropriate standards for disaster video reporting by comparing the value of factual accuracy—aligned with the public's right to know—with the importance of protecting victims’ privacy, from the perspective of news consumers. It ultimately proposes guidelines for the responsible use of video footage in journalism.
Professor Yoon has consistently shown excellence in the field of broadcast journalism research, particularly in studies focusing on video reporting. In 2021, he also received the Kim Se-Eun Journalism Paper Award from the Journalism Research Association of Korea.
Professor Yoon remarked, "This achievement would not have been possible without the collaboration of my co-researchers. I am committed to continuing research that not only holds global significance but also contributes to the betterment of our society."
