임재향 교수는 의학전문대학원 의학과 미생물학교실 소속 교수로 세포미생물학(Cellular Microbiology)을 전공하였다. 특히 호흡기도의 주요 병원체인 폐렴구균(pneumococcus)과 인플루엔자 바이러스(Influenza A)에 의한 세포면역신호전달 기전과 이들 병원체에 의한 호흡기도의 급성조직손상 및 손상의 복구기전에 대한 연구에 주력하고 있다. 현재까지 <Immunity>와 <Nature Communications>를 포함한 20여편의 주저자 논문과 20여편의 공동저자 논문을 SCI(E)급 국제학술지에 발표하였으며, 급성폐조직손상 치료기술에 대한 국제특허를 보유하고 있다.
