Jeon Soo-min (French Language & Literature), Jung Ji-ye (Political Science & International Relations), and Kim Na-yeon (Sociology) won the Consolation Prize for the 2022 Human Asia Student Paper Competition with their research paper “How climate mitigation projects violate rights of local communities: a quantitative analysis of 147 case studies.”

The 2022 Student Paper Competition, co-hosted by Human Asia and Korea University’s International Human Rights Center, was held under the theme of “Climate Crisis and Human Rights” this year. More than 100 teams consisting of university students not only from Korea but other Asian countries applied for the competition this year, and the Ewha team, consisting of undergraduates in the first and second grades, won the award and proved the excellence of Ewha's education.

Ewha teammates met for the first time last semester in Ewha’s liberal arts course, “Human Rights Ethics: Justice and Love,” and devoted themselves to research and writing throughout the summer vacation under the guidance of Professor Kim Hye-ryeong (Hokma College of General Education). Jeon Soo-min said, "I decided to participate in this competition after learning about the violation of human rights of the socially disadvantaged. Through this research, we learned about the discriminative acceptance of international refugee agreements and suggested specific alternatives such as ‘expansion of the scope of refugee agreement,’ ‘establishment of vocational schools for refugees,’ ‘refugee quota system and support from native residents,’ and so on.” Jung Ji-ye mentioned, "Through this experience of exploring the reality and limitations of international law and presenting possible alternatives, I decided to enter law school after graduation.” Kim Na-yeon also expressed her feelings, saying, "It was difficult to write a thesis for the first time after entering the university, but it was a good experience to learn the attitude as a global citizen and researcher.”

“Human Rights Ethics: Justice and Love,” the liberal arts course of Hokma College of General Education, produced the winning team in this year's competition again following last year. Professor Kim Hye-ryeong organized this course in consideration of the social situation in which prejudice, discrimination, and hatred against minorities and vulnerable people have not been reduced despite the considerable development of Korean society's citizenship, helping students to have more mature human rights sensitivity through extra-curricular activities such as student paper competitions.
