The ‘2021 Ewha Social Economy Entrepreneurship Academy’ recently opened up course on September 9th, and offered its first common curriculum. The academy is run by the Social Economy Major(SEM) of Graduate School, advised by the Head Professor Sang-mi Cho. This year is their third Entrepreneurship Academy to nurture Women’s leadership in the Social Economy field. The academy offers education that students could raise their social-entrepreneurship and gain technologies and knowledge regarding start-ups.

Through systematic start-up education, mentoring, and hackathon sessions for undergraduate and graduate students, it provides opportunities to understand the start-up process and strengthen their capabilities. The academy selected 41 talented students(23 teams in total) with innovative ideas in various social issues such as education for the disabled, environment, and education for the vulnerable.

The opening ceremony of the academy was hosted by Professor Min-seok Kim, a senior professor (adjacent professor of SEM), followed by welcoming speeches by Professor So-hyun Lee (SEM/ Special Education) and Professor Sang-mi Cho(SEM/ Social Welfare). Professor Lee congratulated, saying, "I was very impressed that despite this pandemic situation, young people were interested in social issues and wanted to benefit everyone, and I hope it will be a valuable time for various start-up experts to learn about new things."

Do Hyun-myung, CEO of Impact Square, was the first lecturer in the common curriculum lecture following the opening ceremony. The lecture was for prospective founders who are about to start a social venture with a sense of problem under the theme of "those who are worried about starting a social venture." He left a message that start-up itself may be an effort to change society, and thus it is tough. At the same time, however, he described that experiencing a start-up is also a very good educational venue for us to learn how to think critically. That's why he believes that people shall always try their best and challenge themselves.
