Mathematics Alumnae Association Donates KRW 100 Million to the Ewha New Era Fund

Ewha Womans University’s Mathematics Alumnae Association has donated KRW 100 million for the development of its members’ alma mater, commemorating the inauguration of President Hyang-Sook Lee (Mathematics, graduating class of 1986). The donation will be used for Ewha’s top-priority projects in accordance with Ewha’s vision and key tasks.

President Hyang-Sook Lee earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Ewha Womans University and returned to her alma mater as a professor at the Department of Mathematics, followed by her inauguration as the 18th President of Ewha this February as the first in the role with a background in science and technology. Upon the news of her inauguration, President Lee’s alumnae from Ewha’s Department of Mathematics launched a fundraising campaign for the celebratory donation, reaching its goal in approximately only four months.
The fund delivery ceremony to commemorate the donation was held on May 29, 2025 (Thu.) at the reception room in Pfeiffer Hall. The event was attended by alumna Lee Hongsuk (Mathematics, graduating class of 1988), President of the Mathematics Alumnae Association, in addition to attendees from Ewha Womans University including President Hyang-Sook Lee; Jhungsoo Park, Executive Vice President for Research and External Affairs; Yun Jung Choi, Vice President for University Relations and Development; and Hyemi Lee, Associate Vice President for University Relations and Development. President Kim Jaeyeon (Mathematics, graduating class of 1977), alumna Kwon Oh-hyang (Mathematics, graduating class of 1978), alumna Han Jae-uk (Mathematics, graduating class of 1979), and alumna Kwon Suk-kyo (Mathematics, graduating class of 1980) also graced the occasion on behalf of Noksu Society, a former presidents’ group of the Mathematics Alumnae Association.

President of the Mathematics Alumnae Association Lee Hongsuk remarked, “We are happy to have reached the goal of the fundraising campaign, which began as an expression of Ewha Mathematics alumnae’s wish for their alma mater’s development.” She expressed hope for the new President, saying, “At a time where the importance of STEM talents is growing by the day, we hope President Lee’s leadership will steer Ewha Womans University towards playing a pivotal role in society.”
President Hyang-Sook Lee stated, “I appreciate each and every Mathematics alumna’s warm support and empowerment through the donation.” She further added, “In celebration of Ewha Womans University’s 139th anniversary, I will dedicate myself to the vision of ‘Ewha Leading the Era of Great Transformation through Inclusive Innovation’ alongside every member of the Ewha Community.”
