The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in the Division of Advanced Technology at ELTEC College of Engineering was selected for the “semiconductor track program” as part of the “2022 Collaborative Intra-government Expertise Cultivation Project,” which is jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The “semiconductor track program” is designed to develop advanced technologies and supply professionals required by industries, aiming to strengthen the national competitiveness of the semiconductor industry. With funding of KRW 900 million for the next three years, Ewha aims to lead the future semiconductor industry by newly-establishing two semiconductor design tracks, the SoC (System-on-Chip) track and the Circuit track, under the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, in addition to producing more than 40 undergraduate students every year through specialized training programs in semiconductor design. To this end, Ewha plans to form a consortium with domestic semiconductor companies, including LX Semicon, SAPEON Korea, Telechips, Semi Five, VisioNexT, etc., and operate training courses that reflect various issues in the industry.

Students from their junior year can complete the program by taking more than 21 credits in major foundation courses and major courses including four subjects designated by each track. For practical training, the program courses will utilize Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and intellectual properties (IP) that are actually used in the industry and provide special lectures on semiconductor design and others during vacation time to enhance the practical experience of students in the field.

Professor Kim Ji-Hoon, the director of the program, remarked, “Since the semiconductor business is a major strategic industry for our country, it is crucial for Korea to extend its competitiveness from a focus on memory chips to various system semiconductors and strengthen competitiveness in ultra-fine processing. We will organize the program to reflect actual industry trends in our department’s outstanding curriculums, so we can provide students with a solid foundation in semiconductor design and various opportunities for practical training. In addition, we will continue to expand the consortium by attracting more companies and establish a council for academic-industry-research institute cooperation so as to respond promptly and effectively to the rapidly-changing semiconductor industry.”

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Ewha Womans University leads new trends in electronic and electrical engineering by applying AI technology to core research fields, including network and communication systems, semiconductor devices and design, image and signal processing, and semiconductor control, following the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is conducting cutting-edge research projects in electronic and electrical engineering based on artificial intelligence by collaborating with renowned companies, government agencies, and universities at home and abroad, thereby garnering recognition for its accomplishments from world-class academic societies and journals. Moreover, particularly in the semiconductor and circuit design fields, it is leading major research projects related to AI technology, participating in various development projects, including next-generation AI semiconductors, PIM (Processing-In-Memory) technology, and future semiconductor devices, and conducting main hardware design for AI systems including CPU and NPU.
