2021 Ewha International Summer College Session I Held Online

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) successfully hosted the “2021 Ewha International Summer College Session I” over a period of four weeks from June 28 (Mon) to July 23 (Fri).

Ewha launched a summer college program for the first time in Korea in 1971, which introduced Korea to young people across the world, and has since provided a range of programs to reinforce Ewhaians’ global capacity. The OIA is continuing to take on new challenges by opening the international winter college for the first time in 2020, followed by holding the international summer college online this year.

Vice President Lee Hai-young of the OIA delivered a welcome speech at the orientation streamed on YouTube on June 28 (Mon), remarking “We deeply appreciate our students’ willingness and courage to experience a new world by taking part in the Ewha International Summer College, even at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted daily routines and brought about many changes,” and stressed, “Even though students cannot gather together in person for classes, Ewha will do its best to help them achieve academic enrichment by providing high-quality classes.”

“Ewha International Summer College Session I” consisted of substantive programs such as “Korean Cinema,” “Gender Relations in Korea,” “North Korea: History, Politics and Society,” and “Korean Language Level 1/2.” In addition, “K-Pop Dance Session” was livestreamed on July 16 (Fri) as part of cultural experience activities through which the OIA sought to provide students with various experiences.

Taking place over four weeks entirely through Zoom, the event was attended by students from ten countries including the U.S., the Netherlands, Japan, the U.K., New Zealand and Chile, who showed a high level of satisfaction. In particular, the event drew attention by presenting programs, such as “K-Pop Dance Session,” that were geared towards students’ personal interests, and garnered a favorable reception for conducting small-scale classes where students could actively participate in discussions.

The Ewha International Summer College is Korea’s first summer college program and boasts 50 years of history and tradition. It is made up of “Session I” that takes place over four weeks from late June to late July, and “Session II” that takes place over three weeks in August. The OIA plans to diversify its international programs, including the international summer college, and take the lead in training talented individuals worldwide by expanding cooperation with prestigious universities overseas.
