Kang-Sin Choi is a professor of Ewha Womans University. He is interested in how our world is described. In particular he is working on derivation of the Standard Model of particle physics from string theory. In Scranton Honors Program, he teaches science and science-related social problems.

Explaining the world in terms of strings
입자 물리학의 표준 모형을 가장 간단한 원리에서 이끌어내는 것에 관심이 있다. 물리학은, 세상이 무엇으로 이루어져있고 이들이 어떻게 상호작용하나를 탐구한다. 인류가 지금까지 알고 있는 사실은 표준모형에 요약되어 있으며, 이는 수조분의 1센티미터에 이르는 작은 크기에 이르기까지 알려진 현상들을 환원적으로 설명한다. 그러나 더 작은 크기를 관찰할 수 있는 실험을 통해, 표준모형을 보완해야 할 필요가 생겼다. 이를 위한 좋은 방법 중 하나는, 알려진 다양성을 통합하는 더 단순한 이론을 찾는 것이다. 끈이론은 이러한 모든 것의 이론에 대한 좋은 후보인데, 그 자신의 정합성만을 가지고 힘과 기본입자를 기술하는 대칭성을 예견하기 때문이다. 끈 이론은 큰 대칭성과 여분 차원을 예견하므로, 이 큰 대칭성을 여분 차원의 기하학과 연관지어 깸으로써 표준모형이 가진 힘과 입자를 설명하는 작은 대칭을 얻을 수 있다.
