Yonghyun Lee Associate Professor

Prof. Yonghyun Lee, who works as an assistant professor, College of Pharmacy, Ewha Womans University, obtained his B.S. and Ph.D. from the College of Pharmacy at Pusan National University where he received his research training in medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutics. He further expanded his research toolbox as post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Sangyong Jon at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute Science and Technology), where he developed innovative strategies based on bilirubin, a yellow bile pigment that is responsible for jaundice, for treatment and/or diagnosis of cancer and inflammation-related diseases. Since then, his research interests have moved from the development of novel materials to the specific modulation of the immune cells in the inflamed site or the tumor microenvironment by engineering immunity with nature-inspired targeted biomaterials. To explore these interests, he worked the immunoengineering laboratory of Prof. James Moon at the University of Michigan as a research Scientist. He published more than 40 SCI Journal Papers including Nature Materials, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Science, Biomaterials, and etc. For his outstanding works, he has received many awards, including The Promising Young Scientist Award from the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. Currently, his research focuses on development of novel strategies, targeted-modulating gut microbiome, intestinal barriers, and/or immune systems for effective management of inflammation-related diseases (especially for inflammatory bowel diseases) and/or cancer. He also develop simple nano-drug delivery systems for delivery of anti-cancer agents or anti-inflammation agents. A long-term research goal of Lee Lab is to develop a revolutionary strategy that makes cancer tissue eradicated. His translational biomedical research utilizes tools of pharmaceutics, nanotechnology, biomaterials, drug delivery, and biomacromolecules and tissue engineering to achieve His goals.
