Il-Hwan Bai Professor

Department of Orchestral Instruments

Cellist Bai Il-hwan moved to the U.S. at the age of 12 and received his secondary education in L.A.
Afterwards, he received his Bachelor’s degree at Juilliard School, and then went on to receive his Master’s degree at the Yale School of the Music. At Indiana University, he studied with world renowned cellist Janos Starker and was issued 2 years of doctorate program.
He was first chair cello in the Yale Philharonia Orchestra, and at the First Pacific Music Festival that was held in Sapporo, Japan, he had the opportunity to sit first chair under the directions of conductor Leonard Berstein. In 1992, he performed a solo recital at the Hoam Art Hall, and immediately was appointed as the concertmaster for cello at the Korean Symphony Orchestra. In 1993, at a strikingly young age of 27, he became the youngest cellist to be awarded a professor position at Ewha Womens University. He continues to teach at the strings department of Ewha Womens University.
Through personal instructions and teachings to Juilliard Quartet, Tokyo Quartet, and Borodin Trio, his interest and attraction for Chamber music increased, leading him to form <Soma Trio>, and winning a prize in the Third Yeum Camber Contest. As a member of the Korea Festival Ensemble, he formed <Ewha Celli> with his cello students and is actively participating in community service through music. He has recorded three albums with <SOMA TRIO>, two albums with <Ewha Celli> and is serving as the exemplary model of a healthy donation culture by donating all the proceeds from the album sales to our neighbors in need.
He has performed with Korea Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Symphonietta, KBS Symphony Orchestra, Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Yale Philharmonia, Panama Symphony as well as many other orchestras and has performed numerous solo recitals. He has participated in many album projects organized by KBS FM, as has served as music commentator for many TV and Radio shows, increasing his knowledge in classical music.
Along with his current position as professor, he is currently a music ambassador at Korea Food for the Hungry International, and serves as the Executive Director at Beautiful Mind Charity, a philanthropic organization. From 2010 to 2012, as a commissioned member at the Presidential Council on National Branding, he spread the beauty of the Korean culture all around the world.
In the last 7 years, he visited over 65 countries and participated in many diverse concerts. He is making grand steps for strengthening cultural exchanges between countries and continues to help those who are neglected through the power of music. In May 2012, he was recognized by the minister at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for his extraordinary actives and efforts in improving education in Korea.
