The Research Institute of Korean Culture Successfully Completes the first ‘Korean Teacher Training Program for Thailand’

The "Korean Teacher Training Program for Thailand" of the Royal Thai Chulalongkorn University, where the Research Institute of Korean Culture(KCRI, Director: Hai Young Lee) of Ewha participated as a domestic business institution, was successfully completed on April 25 (Sunday) with the commemorial ceremony. 


The training program was part of a government project to build Overseas Korean Language Education System. It was co-hosted by Korean Education Center in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University, and Ewha Woman’s University under a cooperation project. The program is the first to  develop and operate a teacher training course utilizing Thai infrastructure to cope with explosive demand for Korean language education in Thailand, and thus it is significant in that it formed a foundation for continuous training of Korean language teachers in Thailand.


The ceremony started with closing address by Professor Suradech Chotiudompant, the Dean of Liberal Arts College from Chulalongkorn University, congratulatory remarks by Wook Heon Lee, the South Korean Ambassador to Thailand, Professor Hai Young Lee the director of Ewha KCRI. 29 participants who participated in the program were introduced and the certificates were distributed. 


Due to the pandemic situation and arrival of the new-normal era, the ceremony was completely done online. In total of 29 Korean Language Teachers in the future took courses about Korean culture and Korean Language education from famous professors Korea and Thailand. Ewha’s KCRI provided their maximum support for the success of the training, such as creating and developing the training process and evaluation system. Moreover, the KCRI also helped consulting to support classes, created online lectures and more. 


Professor Lee from the Department of Korean Studies(Graduate School of International Studies) said, “Thanks to this training program, now Thai Universities will be able to produce local Korean Language Teachers in Thailand.” She added that, “In the future, we will be able to expect virtuous development from elementary and secondary courses to university education through self-sustaining and continuous growth of Korean language education in Thailand.”
