Seniors of the department of fashion design – Jiyoung Park, Chaeyoung Kim, and Yoonha Lee - won the grand prize at the ‘2020 KT&G SangSang Fasion Runway.’

‘2020 KT&G SangSang Fashion Runway,’ co-hosted by Seoul Metropolitan City and KT&G SangSang Univ, marks its fourth anniversary this year. The runway is one of the urban regeneration culture programs in which seniors interested in fashion participate.

The three students of the department named their team ‘Cherry on the Top’ because they want to make a clean finish of their college years. They went through a design screening, an interview presentation screening, a collaboration test with sewing craftsmen, as well as a mid-term evaluation to reach the final round. Twelve teams from various universities in Korea, including Kyung Hee University, Kookmin University, Deokseong Women's University, Dongduk Women's University, and Seoul Women's University, made the final round of the online fashion show held on Dec. 12. Among them, the team ‘Cherry on the Top’ won the grand prize.

At the ‘2020 KT&G SangSang Fasion Runway,’ under the theme of ‘Newtro of twenties’, each team showed six outfits that they made. The team ‘Cherry on the Top’ reinterpreted the 20s' Newtro by representing 'sporty school looks.' ‘Sporty school looks’ mean fashion of students enjoying sports," and the team’s collection included 6 different looks that were inspired by characters from American high-teen films. The team matched the dark denim with the retro color blocking and graphics. Also, with vivid colors and solid fabrics, they recreated flare trousers and oversized coats, which were popular at the time. In particular, it was noted that their designs contributed to zero-waste and upcycling movements by reducing fabric wastes.

Designer Kwang Hyo Chang, an examiner, said, "The team’s collection has a sense of unity while it contains its own unique characteristics with limited sorts of fabric. I believe they have great potential to be designers."

The department of fashion design aims to train and nurture talent who will play a leading role in education, research, and industry. The department established Korea's first art-based fashion design education course, which allows students to learn research methods through systematic and in-depth design thinking. In addition, the department strives to foster professionalism in design research and green fashion, as well as to lead diverse changes in global fashion design.
