Ewha Korean Cultural Research Institute (Director: Professor Haiyoung Lee) is selected as a domestic business partner for the project ‘to establish a training system for secondary Korean teachers abroad" hosted by the Ministry of Education. Therefore, it will train Korean language teachers, working with Russian universities.

Many people have recently paid more attention to learning the Korean language and Korean studies education, especially in primary and secondary schools. Also, growing numbers of schools abroad are adopting a Korean language course in their regular curriculums. A total of 145,309 students from 1,635 schools in 30 countries– including ASEAN countries, Mongolia and Russia– are taking Korean language courses at elementary and secondary schools.

It has been 30 years since South Korea had a diplomatic relation with Russia. In Russia, currently, there are 42 schools running Korean language courses and 5,165 Korean learners, but there has been no degree course to train teachers who teach the Korean language and culture in regular secondary institutions. In response, the Korean Ministry of Education and the Russian Ministry of Education helped the Moscow State Linguistic University to open a degree course in 2020. The course reported a high competition rate of 23:1 in September 2020, the first year. Ewha Korean Cultural Research Institute provides The Moscow State Linguistic University with consulting and real-time online lectures and several other supports.

Professor Haiyoung Lee, director of Ewha Korean Cultural Research Institute, who is in charge of the project, said, "By providing the professional experience, knowledge, courses and teachers needed to train Korean language teachers, we will establish a structural system for learning the Korean language. In addition, our institution aims to boost up and spread Korean Studies, which is the strong point of Ewha, through a solid cooperation network with foreign universities." The project is expected to address the shortage of Korean language teachers in primary and secondary schools abroad and encourage many students to learn Korean language and Korean studies from their elementary and secondary schools to colleges.
