The student team of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science won the grand prize and the runner-up prize at the "9th National Chemical Engineering Process Design Competition" hosted by the Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers and sponsored by AVEVA and SK Engineering & Construction.

Since 2012, the National Chemical Engineering Process Design Competition aims to provide students with opportunities to experience designing and operating chemical processes. The Competition also serves as an opportunity to discover students with creative ideas and design capabilities and to nurture competent engineers in the domestic plant engineering and process industries.

This year, 60 teams from 25 universities participated fiercely in the competition for about three months from June to compete their engineering process design skills. The competition includes the first round of screening and the final presentation evaluation. The first round of screening is about submitting an advanced simulation design and process reports at the level of "conceptual design and economic assessment" that is actually used within engineering companies on the ground. There are two teams from Ewha. The team OAO won the grand prize, and the team N.D.G. won the runner-up prize, showing the Department is an excellent educational institution.

Under the theme of "designing carbon-free coal gasification hydrogen production plant," the Team OAO (Daeun Shin, Jiu Ha, Sohyun Park, Sihyun Woo from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science), the grand prize winner, analyzed process design simulation and the economic value of  hydrogen production plant from various prospects.

The team OAO went beyond just meeting the conditions given in the problem. The team designed a differentiated process through various attempts, such as designing a new section to reflect reality. The team also enhanced the completeness of process design by analyzing the economic values of the process from multiple points of view, reflecting the current market conditions affected by the current pandemic. The team also looked into a substantial amount of data and evaluated the sustainability and risk of the process.

Shin Da-eun, the team leader, expressing gratitude to the team members and Professor Jonggeol Na, said, "We had to deal with substantial amount of comprehensive and professional contents, from the overall understanding of the hydrogen production plant process to the economic assessment and analysis. Our teamwork enabled all the achievements." She also added, "It is meaningful to learn the meaning of 'design' in chemical engineering."

The team N.D.G(Myungsun Kim, Jungmin Ahn, Jiyoon Jang, Hayoung Jeong from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science) won the runner-up prize for their design of 'hydrogen production plant using coal gasification'.

The team N.D.G presented the criteria of output and purity of the hydrogen process. Based on the criteria, the team designed the optimal process that will allow to turn surplus within four years. The team then assessed the economic feasibility, including process simulation, material balance, construction cost, and operating cost. In particular, the team suggested a design plan of a coal gasification plant considering detailed designs of each unit stage, the verification and sensitivity analysis of the simulation results, environment, and safety, which helped them win the prize.
