Ewha Womans University has received KRW 200 million in donation to the Ewha Medical Research Fund from Sang Soon Phee, President of the College of Medicine Alumnae Association (Medicine, graduating class of 1984), and Duk Hee Kang, Dean of the College of Medicine (Medicine, graduating class of 1988), who each contributed KRW 100 million.
Ewha Womans University held a fund delivery ceremony on April 24, 2025 (Thu.) at the reception room in Pfeiffer Hall to express gratitude to the two donors. Attendees included: donors Sang Soon Phee and Duk Hee Kang, President of the College of Medicine Alumnae Association and the Dean of the College of Medicine; Hyang-Sook Lee, President of Ewha Womans University; Jhungsoo Park, Executive Vice President for Research and External Affairs; Yun Jung Choi, Vice President for University Relations and Development; and Hyemi Lee, Associate Vice President for University Relations and Development.
Alumna Sang Soon Phee is a psychiatrist who operates a clinic in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, and became the president of the College of Medicine Alumnae Association this March. Having made steady donations to her alma mater since 1997, President Phee recalled, “I learned the practice of sharing from my parents ever since I was a little girl. Emptying my bag to hand out presents to my friends, I was able to appreciate the fulfilling joy of giving away until I have nothing left.” Describing the reason behind her donation to the Ewha Medical Research Fund, she explained, “I believe that creating an environment in which faculty and students alike can focus on their studies will be key to the development of the College of Medicine, the Medical Center, and ultimately Ewha itself.” With this donation, President Phee has surpassed KRW 400 million in cumulative donations to Ewha Womans University.
Dean Duk Hee Kang earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees at Ewha Womans University. She has been a professor at the Department of Internal Medicine for 30 years as a leading researcher in nephrology, starting her deanship at Ewha’s College of Medicine this February. Dean Duk Hee Kang remarked, “As someone who was shaped by Ewha’s spirit of sharing and service, I have always been grateful to have the opportunity to dedicate my service to my alma mater. I also wanted to join President Phee, a senior to whom I have great respect, when I saw her making a donation to lead by example as a leader of the alumnae association.” She further added, “I hope these collective efforts will begin to ignite the fervor for fundraising in collaboration between the alumnae association and the college, and lay the cornerstone for facilitating research by faculty and dear students at the College of Medicine, as well as the college’s advancement in general.”
President Hyang-Sook Lee stated, “The collaboration of the college and its alumnae association to support the development of the university will serve as an inspiring example for many.” She further added, “I hope this donation will serve as a stepping stone for the College of Medicine to achieve outstanding research outcomes and educate talented medical professionals who contribute abundantly to society.”
